Hello, Error!, 2021

The essence of chanoyu (Japanese style tea ceremony) is not simply the drinking of tea, but the abandonment of the fictions of the mundane world and the enjoyment by the owner and guest of the new fictions created within a tea room. In chanoyu, various spatial devices are provided, including an outer dew area, to invite people out of their busy daily routines into a purely spiritual world.
One of them is called "nijiriguchi. The nijiriguchi is a small entrance/exit in a tea room, and because of its small size, guests naturally bow their heads as they enter. During the Warring States period, Japan had a strong master-servant relationship, but because of the nijiriguchi, any authority, including feudal lords, would always enter the tea room as a guest, bowing their heads, and enjoying tea as an equal, regardless of their position.
The TEA-ROOM, an art collective that expresses the objects, processes, and spirituality that make up the world of the tea ceremony with contemporary interpretations and elements, attempted through this work to extract and express the "nijiriguchi" technology of neutralizing fiction and paradoxically pursue the mechanism of fiction.
In "Hello, Error!," images of individuals of different genders, ages, and titles reading the same message are projected onto the screen and viewed through the nijiriguchi. The work asks the viewers to experience for themselves how different their impressions of the message are depending on the speaker. By projecting the images onto a screen suspended in multiple layers in a tea ceremony room, the appearance of the speaker is removed and his voice is made to lose its low frequency.
Hello, Error!
